Bovi-Shield™ FPTM – Now USDA Approved Safe For Use in Pregnant Cows and Calves Nursing Pregnant Cows

Today, producers have a more powerful way to build immunity throughout their entire herd because Bovi-Shield™ FPTM is now approved safe by the USDA for use in pregnant cows and calves nursing pregnant cows, when used according to label.

Outstanding Safety Results

For many years, beef producers have been using Bovi-Shield FP to help prevent reproductive and respiratory disease in the herd. Now, based on extensive safety studies conducted by Pfizer Animal Health, the USDA has granted approval allowing Bovi-Shield FP – a 4-way modified live viral (MLV) vaccine – to be used throughout the life cycle of the herd, when used according to label directions.

"The use of 4-way MLVs in pregnant cows and calves nursing pregnant cows has previously been restricted, due to concerns that the vaccine virus may cross the placental barrier and cause abortions," explains Dr. Victor Cortese, associate director, Cattle Veterinary Operations, Pfizer Animal Health. "But, our extensive research has produced outstanding results. In large-scale safety studies, involving more than 1,200 animals, Bovi-Shield FP has been proven safe for use in both pregnant cows and calves nursing pregnant cows when used according to label directions. No other 4-way MLV vaccine has been shown to do that."

In trials measuring the safety of administering Bovi-Shield FP pre-breeding and then again in 10X doses during pregnancy1, 100% of the animals delivered healthy calves-no IBR-induced abortions or fetal infection with BVD occurred. In additional trials studying the safety of administering Bovi-Shield FP pre-breeding and again during each trimester of pregnancy, the calving rate was nearly identical to that of control cows that simply received a sterile water vaccination.

According to the newly approved label, a pregnant cow must be vaccinated pre-breeding with Bovi-Shield FP before a subsequent dose of the vaccine can be administered during the pregnancy. Also, calves nursing pregnant cows may be vaccinated with Bovi-Shield 4 if the dam was vaccinated pre-breeding with Bovi-Shield FP.
