Willey offers producers encouragement

Wythe Willey, outgoing president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), reminded producers of the major role they play in the United States, saying "you are the fabric of our country and a great part of our economy."

In his remarks at the close of NCBA’s annual meeting, Willey reminded producers what Hugh Sidey had said in his speech earlier in the week. "(He) said two important things Wednesday afternoon. Actually, he said many important things, but two I want to draw to your attention.

"Talking about the cattle industry, he said… ‘You are a huge, huge part of this country – far beyond your number.’

"And it’s true. Your industry is a huge part of our culture, the fabric of our country and a great part of our economy."

He left producers with two challenges: The first is to make the NCBA the best organization it can be by helping the volunteers and staff.

The second is to be ready to compete in a world market, and not to be afrad of the challenges it presents. "That is the big arena and you can own it. No one can compete with you for a quality product, food safety and the ability to adapt quickly to your consumer."
