Book Chronicles Life of a Legend

Biography released of beef industry legend Kenneth W. Monfort.

PHOENIX, Ariz. (Jan. 31, 2009) — A wide-ranging biography of beef industry pioneer Ken Monfort brings to life a story of one of the state’s most colorful individuals. Kenny’s Shoes: A Walk Through the Storied Life of the Remarkable Kenneth W. Monfort chronicles the life of an original, colorful and successful businessman. Written by freelance writer Walt Barnhart, a foreword to the book was provided by Hank Brown, former U.S. Senator from Colorado.

Monfort was a down-to-earth man who was able to connect with people at all levels. From his start on his father’s growing cattle feedlot near Greeley in 1950, he helped build a meat empire that eclipsed $1 billion a year in sales and made a mark on thousands of people. Monfort was known in his business for integrity and intelligence. He also served in the Colorado legislature and was a fixture in the Greeley community, often recognized for his unusual fashion sense and weekly columns in a local newspaper. Monfort died in 2001.

Barnhart worked for Monfort of Colorado in the late 1970s, and has established a career in freelance writing and communications consulting, mostly for the livestock and meat industry. He lives with his wife Chris in Littleton, Colo.
