FOX’s Bret Baier Addresses General Session

News anchor Brett Baier shares political insights and story of faith and courage.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 6, 2015) — In the interest of remaining “fair and balanced,” FOX News Channel’s Bret Baier claims he likes both prime rib and steak. The anchor for FOX’s Special Report with Bret Baier made that admission Feb. 6, while addressing beef producers gathered for the 2015 Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show in San Antonio, Texas. Baier recounted anecdotes from his years of interviewing political figures ranging from various members of the U.S. Congress, to presidents George W. Bush and Barrack Obama. He also shared his perspective on political issues of particular interest to cattlemen.

Bret BaierBret Baier said he expects substantial lawmaker resistance to the administration’s proposals for expanding regulatory agency power.

While the current administration has not been particularly meat-friendly, Baier said Obama’s people have been “very engaged” in promoting reauthorization of fast-track trade negotiation authority and adoption of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. Advantageous to the beef industry, both measures are supported by a majority of republicans. However, significant support from congressional democrats will be needed, as well, and Baier said he expects no action until summer, at the earliest. Baier said he does not expect significant tax reform in 2015.

“I think it will be a few years yet — possibly four or five — before we see any real tax reform,” stated Baier. “It’s one of the big issues likely to be punted forward until after the next election.”

Baier said he expects substantial lawmaker resistance to the administration’s proposals for expanding regulatory agency power. Regarding the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) attempts to make “Waters of the U.S.” more inclusive, Baier said the EPA’s apparent goal is to regulate “every bit or water and potential wet spot” in the country. Push-back from the public was apparent in the more than 900,000 comments EPA received. He said he expects Congress to resist further EPA attempts to force its agenda.

Baier noted Mitt Romney’s decision to back away from a second bid for a Republican presidential nomination, and called Wisconsin governor Scott Walker and former Texas governor Rick Perry the current Republican front-runners. “But it’s very, very early yet,” added Baier. With regard to activity among the Democrats, Baier said the Hillary Clinton campaign machine is “turned on.”

The newsman also talked about family, including his young son Paul, who has undergone multiple open-heart surgeries to address congenital heart defects. Proceeds from Baier’s book, Special Heart: A Journey of Faith, Hope, Courage and Love, as well as fees earned through speaking engagements are donated to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C.
